The IdeaPad Y510 speaker is good enough when applied, for example to listen music on film. But it’s not better than speaker of Toshiba Qosmio G40 or even Acer Gemstone 5920G.

Besides, is difficult to expect two speakers and one subwoofer (2.1) can present speaker surround 5.1 sound. At least, the strength of its battery is good enough. With it standard battery (6-cell), Y510 estimated can live in around 4 hour.

Gateway P-170L QS Review: Stylin’ Mammoth Media Laptop

In the epic struggle to come out on top of the media center heap, design and price can really set a laptop apart. Enter the Gateway P-170L QS, a stylish hulk of a desktop-replacement notebook. Unfortunately, this 17-inch widescreen wonder is hobbled by a lack of features, weak graphics, and no HD drive.

Measuring 11.4 by 15.7 by 1.5 inches (HWD) and weighing 8.5 pounds, the P-170L QS lives up to its pre-launch code name, Godzilla. The sleek chassis was designed using in-mold decoration, a process in which decorative art is imprinted beneath the glossy finish. The high-definition widescreen is delightful to look at and fine for multitasking. At 720p screen resolution, it falls a bit short of the 1080p boasted by some of its competitors, but that’s still enough to make HD content look good. Still, the absences of an HD DVD-ROM drive stings.

The system’s feature set is, at best, satisfactory. The three USB ports fall short of the competition. The FireWire port, which Gateway claims its customers aren’t using anymore, has been replaced by an eSATA port. Though eSATA peripherals are in their infancy, they offer significant performance improvements over FireWire and USB. The P170L QS also adds an HDMI-out port, convenient for displaying photo slide shows and presentations on a bigger screen. The 1.3-megapixel camera is handy for video chats, despite the weak included speakers.

The laptop’s 320GB worth of storage space (two 160GB hard drives) is enough to keep you downloading video and photo content for a long time. The P-170L QS performed well despite some mediocre aspects, particularly the graphics, which are integrated—
an unusual choice on such a big laptop. What the notebook lacks in 3D performance it makes up for in battery life, generating more than 3 hours on MobileMark 2007 using its 58-Wh battery.

Although the P-170L QS is a decent bargain when you factor in the price tag and new design, you’re getting only passable features and mediocre performance parts for your money.

Gateway P-170L QS Review
Price Range: $1,299 direct
Specs: 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250; 2GB DDR2 SDRAM; two 160GB, 5,400-rpm hard drives; 358MB Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 graphics; 17-inch, 1,440-by-900 display; 8.5-pound system weight (9.7-pound travel weight); 58-Wh, 5.2-Ah lithium ion battery; Windows Vista Home Premium.

HP iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger Review: Voice Smartphone from Hewlett-Packard

Returns to smartphone market, Hewlett-Packard starts it with launch HP iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger. “Voice Messenger” word refers to special feature related to voice. For example the gadget ability to reads e-mails. Moreover, we can reply the email with voice record, where the voice record would be in form of attachment e-mail with wav format. According to HP, this way enables message delivery which more practical and personal.

Targeted to bussines segment, iPAQ 512 of course is supplied with lot off features that is supporting productivity like push e-mail and VoIP. To connect to network, there is available GSM, GPRS, WiFi b/g, and Bluetooth connection. And because using Windows Mobile 6 Standard operating system, all computing activities in PC or your notebook can be synchronize with this gadget. Unhappily, the Office Mobile application inside this smartphone it’s viewer only.

Compared to all PDA phone which been released by HP, this design have been more closingly to a phone. It’s fit and comforts to be grasped. Possibly we can say alike Nokia N70. Even it’s covered by plastic, combination of black and grey makes it seen classy. Fingger track also not seen; of course except at the screen.

Button formation in keypad it’s relatively close, so maybe will annoying big thumb people. Backlight facilitates sees the button in dark place. Besides left-right menu button and Call-End Call button, there is a Home button to returns to initial windows and Back button to return to menu before.

1,3 Megapixel camera in backside only accompanied by mini mirror; no addition flash lamp. It’s also no camera shortcut button. So, to apply camera, we must open Start, Camera. Looks in default menu, in Shortcuts menu there is shorcut button for Take a Photo. Otherwise, we can modify one of them to make shortcut to Camera.

On the top of camera there is a speaker. According to us, the voice is standard and tends to soft, even at maximum volume. Its more comfort applies the headset to listen music. Headset line-in in phone left under side, adjacent with MicroSD slot. Volume button also resides in phone left side, parallel with the screen.

With feature bases on sophisticated voice, iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger gives satisfaction to its busy user. Moreover with its average price, makes it more reached compared to one class peripheral like 02 Xda Atom Stealth or Dopod C720w. Unhappily, in the middle of 3G network trends, this peripheral only supports GPRS.

Sanyo PLC-XL50 Review: Shortest Projection Distance

Sometimes the existence of projector narrows the room. The projector which requiring far enough shoot distance makes room felt congested.

The problems seem to be thought also by Sanyo, electronic company of Japan. Recently they launch a projector which suited for company which does not have big meeting room: Sanyo PLC-XL50.

Sanyo gives it title “World's Shortest Projection Distance”. For your info, to present projection object as wide as 80 inch, this projector only requires shoot distance to screen as far as 8 centimeter.

Mean, this projector can be drawn near until almost patch to screen. Hence, it also guarantees projection result which free of presenter shadow as result of projector lamp spotlights.

If compares to NEC WT610 projector. At 61 cm shoot distance, this projector only can present result of projection as wide as 78 inch.

Sanyo can double the shoot distance with more sophisticated projection technology. NEC WT610 only apply mirror to cut short shoot distance, while Sanyo PLC-XL50 applies combination between lenses and non-sferical mirror, or mirror which do not bounce electromagnetic impulse.

This projector applies LCD XGA machine (resolution 1024 x 768). Brightness level presented by it is reaching 2000 lumens.

As for its contrast ratio reaching 600 : 1. This is including bright for a LCD projector. Color presented from computer screen is sharply enough and still saves detail in video dark part.

What little bothering is noise and posterization effect when presenting skin color. Discoloration happened seen not gradual, but drastic.

Meanwhile, this projector built-in audio system shows result that is surprising enough. It can yield hard enough sound and fulfills a big room.

With the size 20 x 37,3 x 50 cm and weight 7,6 kilograms, this projector of course pertained heavy and big. This makes projector setting is more disturbingly compared to other projectors.

Besides, this projector remote control cannot take over mouse pointer function for merely opening the next presentation page. But, it also equipped some other addition, for example Easy Off Function and On-Start Function, so user can turn off and turn on it swiftly.

Moreover, Color Board Mode feature enables user to use color media so that screen do not always must having white color. For the security, it also provides Audio Alarm feature, which will give warning if there are any thief try to take the projector.

Time Light projection clock

The necessity to have a device that can wake you up is obvious, yet at present nobody wants to possess a simple traditional alarm clock. At least people want it to be original and perform more than a single function. That's probably the reason why Oregon Company's new gadget is so multifunctional and unusual.

The given concept was named Scientific Time Light Projection Clock. In addition to its main function, it adds a twist of colour to weather forecasting. Thus, on a sunny day the corresponding icon glows in bright red. On a rainy day, the icon is a gloomy purple. Moreover this device has a wireless sensor that indicates both the inside and outside temperatures once you place it outdoors. The crescendo alarm wakes you up gradually, and projects its data onto your ceiling, automatically illuminating when the lights go out. As far as the main features of the gadget are concerned they are the followings:

* forecasts the weather 12 to 24 hours in advance using colour-changing graphical icons: sunny – red/orange, partly cloudy – pink, cloudy – turquoise, rainy – purple, snowy - green
* displays and stores daily high/low memory for indoor and outdoor temperature measurements
* indoor temperature range: 23°F to 122°F (–5°C to 50°C)
* outdoor temperature range: -22°F to 140°F (–30°C to 60°C)
* projection feature displays Atomic time, outdoor temperature and alarm status
* touch key technology
* projection automatically turns on depending on room brightness
* 180° projection rotation
* automatically adjusts for Daylight Saving Time
* features crescendo alarm with 8-minute snooze
* features 12/24-hour format clock with calendar in 5 languages - English, French, German, Italian or Spanish
* LED backlight for easy viewing in lowlight conditions
* included sensor wirelessly transmits weather data from up to 100 feet (30 meters) away
* batteries included: three AAA (main unit) and one AA (sensor)
* dimensions : 4.78L × 4.57H × 2.29D inches

As a result I would say that this device seems to be very useful one. In my view it represents a great combination of functionality and price.

Oil Spill Protection robots

It's a well known fact that oil spills have quite a negative impact on the marine environment. However it's impossible to guarantee that no oil tankers will be shipwrecked. But in case of a shipwreck the first thing to be done is to prevent the expansion of an oil spill. In fact it's not an easy task because the only way to do so is to surround it. Till now there wasn't a certain way to eliminate the oil spills from the water surface. Yet this gadget represents a great achievement in this domain.

It was called OSP robot. Using advance technologies, these robots autonomously work together to contain an oil spill by surrounding it with an inflatable barrier. So once contained, clean-up crews can clean the water surface.

Given gadget consists of three important modules:

1. Boom control module: by the help of which it's possible to plan and control the motion of the whole system.
2. Communication module: due to the installed GSP system and radio antenna OSP can communicate with other units.
3. Propulsion module: two motor-driven propeller screws are mounted in the unit and can be easily exchanged in case of malfunction

In addition to this OSP robot has a solar panel that can collect photo voltaic energy, supplying thus power to drive motor. As regards its oil protection boom it should be mentioned that it's stored in body and is rapidly rolled out in oil spill protection operation.

With the help of its simple and modular structure, OSP unit can be transported to the accident site rapidly and commence its mission immediately. Like a torpedo and mine operation in navy, OSP can be deployed from a helicopter or boat and accomplish its mission through the multi-robot control algorithms, being thus an extremely useful invention.

An ultra compact printer

It's quite an understandable fact that at present people generally prefer to buy multifunctional devices. So devices that perform just a single function should possess some really distinctive features (at least original design) in order to be bought. Taking this point into consideration the producers of printers, which probably represent the most popular single functional devices, decided to make them more compact, original and useful. Most likely it was an attempt to prolong the life cycle of a printer as a device because there is quite a high probability that in the near future something absolutely new will be invented in this domain.

The main advantage of given gadget consists in its unique design that differs a lot from boring and unimaginative design of usual printers. Moreover it's so compact that you can easily put it into your backpack with laptop. Thus, the designer of Trak printer, Hung Chih Wang, has brilliantly re-imagined mobile printing by placing the entire operation on the back of a laptop display. So, with a detachable printer head and USB powered, this ultra compact gadget would probably be perfect for those users who like travelling.

I think no one have doubts about the usefulness and originality of this device. Yet despite the mentioned advantages there is one point that may slightly disappoint some customers. Given gadget due to its compactness has no place for the paper, so users will probably be forced to place a new sheet of paper manually.

Pen-shaped wireless mouse

There is no need to explain the importance of a mouse as a controlling device for any PC user. It's hard to imagine that there may be an alternative to this well-known device that we've got accustomed to. Yet, it's not the fact that the traditional shape of the mouse is the most convenient and efficient one. Thus, some designers think that there is a possibility to change the way mouse looks.

The proposed gadget being a wireless mouse looks like a standard pen. Actually this unique device functions as a simple pen as well enabling you to put down everything you want, but when you detach the receiver and insert it into your USB port, the pen turns into a wireless mouse. So functionality and portability of the concept represents its key advantages in comparison with a usual mouse.

It has three buttons positioned on its side in the row. So the user can still have the three buttons to use. However, it does not have a scrolling wheel, which reduces its usability.

I have no doubts that this gadget is great for casual browsing; however, if you deal with graphics design or something like this, you will probably encounter some problems, at least at the first dash. No information is available about refillable cartridges, but I hope that the pen comes with them, because otherwise it would be a waste of money to purchase a new unit each time you need one. Nevertheless it is quite a decent idea that most likely will have its proponents.

Rim BlackBerry 8820 Review: A Sweet BlackBerry for Bussines

This new BlackBerry adds three varieties of Wi-Fi 802.11a, b, and g - to AT&T businesslike BlackBerry 8800. There’s not much use for the new connectivity, but that’s okay, because the 8820 is a fine enterprise handheld anyway. And it isn’t all business- the 8820 also includes the latest BlackBerry music and videoplayer.

Unfortunately, the 8820 doesn’t let you make voice calls over Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi doesn’t speed up e-mail delivery or Web browsing. But it will give you e-mail access indoor, in places where you my not have a cellular signal. The handheld’s enterprise focus is underscored by its support for business-friendly 802.11a and a range of VPNs, including Cisco and Check Point.

Otherwise this is essentially a BlackBerry 8800, and that’s a good thing. It shares the 8800’s very good quad-band world-phone performance, beautiful screen, long battery life, TeleNav GPS navigation, and easy-to-use BlackBerry e-mail. Sadly, it also shares the 8800’s lack of 3G cellular networking, which is frustrating for road warriors who want to use the 8820 as laptop modem.

If you business demand that you use a device without a camera, the 8820 will help you get your work done efficiently, Wi-Fi or not.

Gateway T-140X: Trendy Gateway Laptop

With its laptops, Gateway has consistently put performance over design. The T-140X however, signals a change of pace. This 14-inch widescreen’s slick looks, complete with a choice of colors and designs laminated into the lid and palm rests, will appeal to the style-conscious. But to keep the price low, Gateway went with weak processing components, hurting performance.

The T-140X's Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 CPU runs at a modest 1.5 GHz. There's only 1GB of RAM (not enough for Vista Home Premium); moreover, the integrated graphics grab some of the system memory. Consequently, the T-140X produced low SYSmark 2007 Preview and multimedia scores. Also, the 49-Wh (six-cell) battery lasted just 2 hours 5 minutes running down a DVD.

Gateway did add a few nice components, including a 160GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD burner, and a 1.3-megapixel swivel webcam. We also liked the full-size keyboard, which is solid and responsive. But although the T-14OX is a handsome laptop at a low price, for the cost of upgrading you could get a better system like the Dell Inspiron 1420.

Motorola Q9m (Verizon): Sophisticated, but Sluggish

This latest smartphone for Verizon pairs excellent call quality with a top-notch keyboard, making it a strong Windows Mobile choice. I just wish it felt a little quicker.

The Q9m’s keyboard is the biggest change from the old Motorola Q. The larger, rectangular keys are easier to settle your fingers on (which helps prevent mistyping), and they depress with satisfying clicks. All but the most ham-handed will fl y over this smartphone's keyboard.

A superior phone, the Q9m has very strong reception. The earpiece and especially the speakerphone are unusually loud and clear, and ringtones sound terrific.

Verizon has updated the Q9m with a lot of useful new software. At the head of the pack is DataViz DocumentsToGo for Windows Mobile 6, which lets you view PDFs and view, edit, and create Microsoft Offi ce documents. Also, it’s Word-, Excel-, and PowerPoint-compatible apps are refreshing oases of cutting and pasting. Verizon’s new media-player home screen is less accommodating, but you don’t have to use it.

The Q9m’s one problem is that it feels a bit laggy. When typing an e-mail message, I sometimes had to wait for the screen to catch up with my typing, and PDF files took quite some time to open. Still, the new Q is a powerful, flexible mobile office.

Price
Motorola Q9m (Verizon): $199 to $349.99 list
